NEW DELHI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- At least three children were killed and several others feared missing on Thursday after heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods in southern Indian state of Kerala, officials said.

"We have reports that three children including two siblings were killed after flash floods triggered landslide at Kattippara near Thamarassery here," an official posted in Kozhikode district said.

"Five houses in the area have been completely destroyed, triggering apprehensions about the safety of its inhabitants. Besides, three families are feared trapped in the affected area."

The officials said they were collecting the details and would share it after confirmation.

Local media reports said 10 people were missing in the landslides and flash floods.

Incessant rains lashed northern districts of Kerala, triggering landslides and damaging property. The affected districts include Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, Kottayam and Alappuzha. Schools in the affected districts have been closed as a precautionary measure.

The death toll in rain-related incidents since May 29, the day southwest monsoon hit the state, has risen to 24.

Local government officials affiliated with the disaster management department have requested additional help from India's National Disaster Management Authority to deal with the situation in Kozhikode.

Authorities have set up relief camps for people in the affected districts.

The officials blame the continuous rainfall for impeding the rescue operation. Meanwhile, India's Meteorological department officials have predicted more rains for the next 24 hours.

"Squally wind speed reaching 35--45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph very likely along and off Karnataka--Kerala coasts. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over these areas. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas," said an advisory issued by the department.
