Boeing pledges to create 100,000 jobs for American workers in five years

SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 (Xinhua) -- U.S. aircraft giant Boeing Company said Thursday that it is echoing U.S. President Donald Trump's call for making more jobs with a pledge to create employment opportunities for 100,000 American workers in the next five years.

Boeing said it will provide these jobs through "a combination of increased work-based learning such as apprenticeships and internships, continuing education, on-the-job training and re-skilling."

The U.S. top airplane maker said it has previously made an investment of 300 million U.S. dollars in Boeing employees and communities, with 100 million dollars dedicated to workforce development.

Boeing's announcement came as a support for President Trump's "Pledge to American Workers" aiming at boosting employment at a time when the country's economy is what Trump touted as better than any time.

Trump said Thursday at an event at the White House that the pledge will help train about 3.8 million students and workers for new jobs as some business executives and trade organizations signed a commitment to train workers to bolster the U.S. economy.

Boeing said it will partner with Degreed.com to provide employees at all levels with access to online lessons, certification courses and degree programs.

It admitted that it has invested more than 1 billion dollars in the the Learning Together Program, which provides up to 25,000 dollars per year for employees' college tuition, books and fees.

Boeing vowed to invest in several major re-skilling programs to help employees enhance technical skills and understand industry trends, tools and technologies. Initial programs will focus on digital literacy, engineering and supply chain.

"Our long-term plans represent a down payment on the future of our employees and tomorrow's technical workforce," said Heidi Capozzi, senior vice president of Human Resources at Boeing.
